Gualterio Nunez Estrada, Sarasota, Florida, 34232.

(CNN) -- Members of a militia charged with plotting to kill police were not Christian or a militia, a man acquainted with the group said Tuesday.

"This is a group that I would classify as neither a militia or a Christian group," said Michael Lackomar, a member of the Southeast Michigan Volunteer Militia. "They're really a fringe group outside of anything we do.

A suicidal "kamikaze", perhaps a madman manipulated by others, recently launched a plane into the building of internal revenue which must now be demolished.
A technique of terrorism is "to handled under the table" the religious sentiments of a person or state of dementia, to bring him against his own society as the army did in Japan, knowing they are loossing the war, with "kamikaze".
"They're more of a private army or a terrorist organization or really just a criminal organization."
Federal authorities on Monday charged nine members of a group called the Hutaree militia with conspiring to kill a Michigan law enforcement officer and then kill other officers at the funeral.
The group says on its Web site that Hutaree means "Christian warrior." Its home page said it is "Preparing for the end time battles to keep the testimony of Jesus Christ alive."

"Tenderness versus violence". SEX BEHAVIOR SINCE THE POINT OF VIEW OF AMERICAN WOMAN LIVING IN CUBA.kyūba de wa , dansei no sekkusu no dōsa desu .

The culture of solidarity prevailing in Cuba, to the culture of the individuality of the United States, can you explain how the phenomenon of violence against women is expressed in both contexts

"What I can tell you you have do not have other men?..." It's the value of your own tenderness.

D. H. Lawrence
I grew up in a culture of violence during a violent. My eyes were male violence in many places of my environment. In the streets of Philadelphia saw gang of boys with firearms. On television he saw their images in Vietnam.
An image that always accompanies me is the newspaper in the city of my youth. Every day on the front cover featured a column entitled daily account of crime: a list of the number of women raped (for men) on that day, the number of people killed (for men), the number of people attacked violently (invariably male)...
All these events occurred during 24 hours in my city. Day after day, token such violence. My home with a divorced mother and a sister, was my refuge. So I learned that tenderness was female and male violence. I needed to travel very far to open the eyes and the heart to a different perspective.
The unknown
My first significant encounter with the male tenderness begins in the early hours of the day I arrived in Cuba. Had many expectations and wishes to absorb every facet of the country that I decided to explore it immediately.
I left the hotel and I went on the Boulevard of Bishop, in old Havana. The streets were dark and empty. While dawn came to the San Francisco square and saw hundreds of meeting men.
My experience and education said me that this was not a safe position for a single woman. I felt fear, emotionally. Then I remembered where it was. Intellectually knew that it was safe because it was in Cuba............

........I went to the men and I was fascinated. Had been faced with a sample exquisite smoothness and male beauty: perched on their toes, acuclillados on his shoulders, there were hundreds of tropical birds.
I looked at the interaction between men and birds. They extended it caresses. Speaking to their birds. Kiss them. The displayed proudly to his friends. They were open in her affections and suavidades. I have never seen a group of men as open to other men.
This male tenderness of Cuba caught my attention, my fascination and my admiration because it was so contrary to my world. Until that point I had not known that tenderness on a large scale. In this new land it was on the streets. In my homeland saw violence and violence corollary is a great lack of tenderness.
Why in Cuba? I believe that there are many explanations for the difference between my country and men from here. Differences of culture, differences between a life of cooperation and competition life and sex education.
On the one hand saw the activism of national organizations in Cuba, on the other ubiquitous pornography in the United States that glorifies violence against women and trafficking as object and love to weapons, which also glorified violence.
A culture of solidarity to a culture of individuality can be explained how the violence against women is expressed in both contexts. In Cuba, the FMC and the legal system are proactive in the fight against the sexism, many evils root. There is no comparable organization or national legal statutes in the United States to defend women's rights in this way.
The concept of solidarity within the Cuban revolution emphasizes cooperation and engenders tenderness, softness, consideration, empathy. In the United States fierce individuality accentuates the competition often engenders aggression, hardness, roughness, and removes that tenderness.

Not to say that no man in Cuba show violence or all are tender. I am not idealizando to the Cuban people. I am aware that machismo and violence exist throughout the world. My point is that I saw something different in men of that island, something that gives me hope of a world better. There is still work to do, but Cuba is actively doing that job.
Gangs and war were my background. My travels around the United States reinforced this construction. I have not found a street in my country where I as a woman I feel safe walking alone at night. No Street!

My violent culture is what is known. My meeting with men who openly express tenderness is otherwise unknown, a shock to my psyche. For the first time I felt free, secure, peer of both sexes.
I learned something deep in my heart: that tenderness is a feature that is learned, and that violence is not a male trait innate.
In my adult life I have lived in the world of women. I have chosen female tenderness surround me because I feel that this protects me from my violent culture. In a web of CENESEX, called friends and friends, I have written to women about what Cuban men have taught me, and perhaps can now have a man in my life, a man full of tenderness. Will I have my own tenderness value to reach?

Me acerqué a esos hombres y quedé fascinada.

Cuba Ready for U.S. Tourists If Travel Ban Ends, Minister Says. Bloomberg.

By Jonathan J. Levin

March 25 (Bloomberg) -- Cuba’s hotels would be able to handle an expected surge of 1 million American tourists should the U.S. Congress lift its 47-year ban on travel to the Communist island, Tourism Minister Manuel Marrero said.
“I’m convinced that today, with the available capacity, we could be receiving the American tourists without any problem,” Marrero said in an interview today in Cancun, Mexico where he was attending a conference of 40 American and Cuban tourist industry representatives.
The Caribbean nation is set to expand its capacity of about 50,000 rooms, with groundbreaking scheduled by the end of 2010 on at least nine hotels, Marrero said. He estimated that the country may add 200,000 rooms in the medium to long-term, without providing more details.
Today’s tourism industry meeting comes as the U.S. Congress considers a law that would lift the ban on travel to Cuba. Senator Byron Dorgan, one of 38 co-sponsors of the bill, said he has 60 votes lined up to win passage of the measure this summer. Similar legislation introduced in the House has 178 co-sponsors and needs 218 votes to pass if all 435 members vote.

“This is a 50 year-old failed policy,” Dorgan, a North Dakota Democrat, told the meeting today in a phone call from Washington. “Punishing Americans by restricting their right to travel just makes no sense at all.”
‘New Era’
President Barack Obama said yesterday that he’s seeking a “new era” in relations with Cuba even as he denounced “deeply disturbing” human rights violations by its government. He did not say where he stands on lifting the travel ban.
Obama last year ended restrictions on Cuban-Americans traveling to Cuba and transferring money to relatives back home. The U.S. State Department has also held talks in Havana with Cuban officials about restoring mail service and cooperation on migration issues.
Tourism to Cuba increased 3.5 percent amid the global financial crisis to 2.4 million visitors last year, with 900,000 visitors from Canada leading the way, Jose Manuel Bisbe, commercial director for the Tourism Ministry, said in an interview this week in Havana.
Bisbe expects foreign arrivals to grow by a similar amount this year. If the U.S. travel ban is lifted, hotels won’t be overburdened because Americans will visit year-round and face capacity problems only during the winter high season when occupancy reaches 85 percent, he said.
‘Forbidden City’
“Havana has been the forbidden city for so long that it will be a boom destination even in the low season,” said Bisbe, who estimates Cuba will add another 10,000 hotel rooms in the next two or three years.
Daniel Garcia, who has sold tourists used books in Old Havana since 1994, said more Americans would be good for business.
“The gringos can’t help but spend their money,” Garcia, 43, said at his stand in front of the neo-classical building that housed the U.S. Embassy before Fidel Castro’s 1959 revolution. “They are the easiest tourists to sell to. They never ask for discounts.”
Marrero said the government can’t finance development of tourist infrastructure on its own so it’s scouting for foreign partners such as Majorca, Spain-based Sol Melia SA, which already manages 24 hotels on the Communist island.

The bank problem just keeps growing

New players in the colony

The spate of bank failures is bringing new players into Florida. Giant Wells Fargo bought Wachovia. JPMorgan Chase grabbed Washington Mutual. BB&T bulked up by buying Colonial. A private investor group took over BankUnited, the largest Florida-based bank, and reopened it under the same name.
This has further cemented Florida's reputation as a banking colony, where nine of the 10 largest banks are   owned by out-of-state interests.
“This time many of our banks, including some of our largest, are being bought not only by big banks from other states but direct private equity and other big money interests from Wall Street,” Thomas said.
“I am most concerned, though, with those among the latter who only care about a return to their Wall Street investors rather than to the community, which is essentially the difference between those that may be called ‘carpetbagger bankers*' rather than community bankers,” he said.

*In United States (U.S.) history, carpetbagger(s) was a negative term Southerners (Americans living in the southern half of the United States, also known as Rebels) adopted and gave to opportunistic and speculative Northerners (Americans living in the northern half of the United States, also known as Yankees) who moved to the South during the Reconstruction era, between 1865 and 1877. They often formed alliances with freedmen (freed slaves), and scalawags (southern whites who were Republicans) in the Republican Party. Together they are said to have politically manipulated and controlled former Confederate states for varying periods for their own financial and power gains. In sum, carpetbaggers were seen as insidious Northern outsiders with questionable objectives meddling in local politics, buying up plantations at fire-sale prices, taking advantage of poor Southerners and pushing their alien Northern ways on Southern politics. Carpetbagger is not to be confused with copperhead, which is a term given to a person from the North who sympathized with the Southern claim of right to Secession.

The term carpetbaggers was also used to describe the white Northern Republican politicians who came South, arriving with their travel carpetbags. Southerners considered them ready to loot and plunder the defeated South.[1]
In modern usage in the U.S. the term is sometimes used derisively to refer to a politician who runs for public office in an area in which he or she is not originally from and/or has only lived for a very short time.
In the United Kingdom, the term was adopted to refer informally to those who join a mutual organization, such as a building society, in order to force it to demutualize — to convert into a joint stock company – solely for personal financial gain.

Asian market and Wal Mart Stores:The problem is that investors have gotten carried away with the latest investment theme to grip Asian markets: inventory re-stocking.

HEARD ON THE STREETMARCH 24, 2010.Li & Fung's Early Warning  "The Wall Street Journal"

Consider it an early warning.

Shares of Hong Kong-listed clothing supplier Li & Fung—which sources apparel for the likes of Wal-Mart Stores(See the news about stocks*) and Kohl's—slid nearly 11% Thursday on the heels of its 2009 earnings report.
The problem isn't with Li & Fung. Last year was its most profitable yet, with earnings rising 39% even as weakness among U.S. and European retailers pushed sales lower.
.The problem is that investors have gotten carried away with the latest investment theme to grip Asian markets: inventory re-stocking.
Economists argue that Asia's export recovery is entering a new phase as U.S. retailers fill their storerooms with T-shirts and laptop computers in anticipation of returning shoppers. A rebound in stockpiles makes some sense. U.S inventories have been depleted for four straight quarters, and the ratio of inventories to sales collapsed to almost a decade-low in January.

Investors have piled in behind this. Li & Fung was trading at record highs and substantially over historic valuations. Shares of others, like South Korea's Samsung Electronics, which sells everything from computer chips to mobile phones, and Yue Yuen, which makes shoes for Nike, Adidas, Timberland and other big brands, have fared similarly well.
But re-stocking will be a long and not entirely smooth process. Already the fits and starts are evident: With economists expecting U.S. wholesale inventories to increase in January, they actually fell.
In addition, businesses, remembering the damage done during economic the crisis, may stick to a shorter restocking cycle. The Institute for Supply Management says 68% of the nonmanufacturers it surveyed last month think inventory levels are "about right," while 26% said they were "too high"—both indications that big stockpiling isn't in the immediate forecast. Broadly, its February business surveys show inventories are still contracting.
On this front, Li & Fung is a bellwether. Orders are picking up, but the company's president, Bruce Rockowitz, was quick to note that a return to the high inventory levels of 2007 is not in the cards.
Take heed.

Trading Idea - Is Wal-Mart close to Resistance?

New York, March 25th (TradersHuddle.com) - Shares of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (NYSE:WMT) are trading very close to calculated resistance at $56.27 with the current price action closing at just $55.58 placing the stock near levels that make it difficult to buy.
Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (NYSE:WMT) operates discount stores, supercenters, warehouse membership clubs, and neighborhood markets. The Company's stores sale products like general merchandise, apparel, electronics and groceries. Wal-Mart operates the warehouse membership stores under the Sam's Club name, where the company sell assorted merchandise including its private label products. Wal-Mart was founded by Sam Walton in 1945 and is based in Bentonville, Arkansas.
Wal-Mart's current stock range is defined by current calculated support defined at $48.73 and by the resistance level at $56.27, the stock is clearly over-extended from support, making it difficult to establishing new long positions at this level.
Traders don't have a clear entry point for Wal-Mart, as the stock is well above support, however, as the stock pulls back towards $48.73 it will definitely provide a reference point to establish a trade. On the other hand if the stock decides to break above resistance level at $56.27 then traders will get an opportunity to enter Wal-Mart stock by establishing a position as the stock moves to a higher range.

How climate influenced the evolution of humans

D. BALASUBRAMANIAN "The Hindu", India newspaper
"...a group of Academies in the US are proposing a long-range research programmes (see their paper at www.nap.edu/catalog/12825.html).The focus will be on two broad themes. The first is on impacts of climate change and climate variability on human evolution and dispersal. It is now realized that the build up of oxygen, through billions of years of photosynthesis by plants, led to a major shift around 500 million years (MYr) ago, in the atmosphere, environmental ecology and landscape development. This, in turn, is thought to have led to an “explosion” of life forms.

On the flip side, a massive meteoric crash on earth 65 Myr ago led to not only the extinction of dinosaurs, but of many other species through the crash, the resultant heat and the cutting off of sunlight through the massive dust clouds and the resultant cooling of the earth's surface."
The effort here will have to be more region-specific. What were the climatic patterns in Africa, West Asia and Eurasia? And how can one connect these with archaeological and DNA data available from fossils of apes and humans?

Collaborations needed
How can we do so? This would require collaboration between oceanographers and geologists who have put together models of oceans and coast lines, volcanic eruptions and climatic variations over long periods in earth history on one hand, and anthropologists and paleontologists, who have been gathering data on vegetation, animal and human fossils on the other.
It would further need gene biologists who can study the variations in whatever DNA samples they can lay these hands on, and reconstruct our genetic history
India's rich tradition

India has a rich tradition in researchers in archaeology, paleobotony, genetics, and ocean science. We must join this forthcoming international program, by providing talent and treasury.
We often pride ourselves on our ancient heritage.
Let us put our efforts into understanding our evolutionary heritage, since we often repeat the platitude ‘Vasudhaiva kutumbakam' (the whole world is one family). Also, The program attempts to understand how clay moulded us into existence in the first place.

Brazil fines Google for not censoring dirty jokes March 24, 2010 - 7:05AM

A Brazilian court Tuesday fined US Internet giant Google for not blocking pages of dirty jokes on its social networking site Orkut.
The court in the northern state of Rondonia ordered Google to pay 2,700 US dollars for each day that the pages remained up, and told it to stop similar material being posted.
It rejected Google's argument that the company did not have the technical means or employees needed to police Orkut, a Facebook-like community that has its biggest following in Brazil.
The court noted that Google already implemented such curbs on its pages in China -- but did not address the major Google-China dispute over censorship that saw the US company direct Chinese users of its search engine to its freer Hong Kong service.
According to the Brazilian judge, the Google lawsuit stemmed from two teenagers who said they were offended by the material on the Orkut pages.

Australia's biggest technology companies, communications academics and many lobby groups have delivered a withering critique of the government's plans to censor the internet.
The government today published most of the 174 submissions it received relating to improving the transparency and accountability measures of its internet filtering policy.
Legislation to force ISPs to implement the policy is expected to be introduced within weeks. The filters will block a blacklist of "refused classification" websites for all Australians on a mandatory basis.
Most of the submissions called for full transparency surrounding the operation of the list and for all sites placed on the list by bureaucrats at the Australian Communications and Media Authority first to be examined by the Classification Board.
They supported a regular review of the list by an independent expert and the ability for blacklisted sites to appeal.
But many reiterated their concerns that the policy is fundamentally unsound and would do little to make the internet a safer place for children. Many said the scope of blocked content was too broad and would render legitimate sites inaccessible, while the process of adding sites to the blacklist could be subject to abuse by bureaucrats and politicians.
Google, which today officially stopped censoring search results in China, said it had held discussions with users and parents around Australia and "the strong view from parents was that the government's proposal goes too far and would take away their freedom of choice around what information they and their children can access".
Google also said implementing mandatory filtering across Australia's millions of internet users could "negatively impact user access speeds", while filtering material from high-volume sites such as Wikipedia, YouTube, Facebook and Twitter "appears not to be technologically possible as it would have such a serious impact on internet access".
"We have a number of other concerns, including that filtering may give a false sense of security to parents, it could damage Australia's international reputation and it can be easily circumvented," Google wrote.
The search giant said it was preferable instead to focus on improving education around cyber safety and providing tools that people could install on their home computers to block unwanted content.
Many of Google's concerns are mirrored by many of the other submissions by academics, technology companies, industry groups, lobby groups and ISPs.
Microsoft demanded protection against "arbitrary executive decision making" surrounding content added to the list and noted the potential for banned material to be loaded on to a site without the sanction of the owner of that site.
Yahoo and Google's submissions, along with many others, expressed concerns that the scope of content to be filtered was too broad.
"Yahoo are entirely supportive of any effort to make the internet a safer place for children, however mandatory filtering of all RC material could block content with a strong social, political and/or educational value," Yahoo's submission read.
It listed some examples of innocuous sites that could be blocked including:
- Safe injecting and other harm minimisation website
- Euthanasia discussion forum
- A video on creating graffiti art.
- Anti-abortion websites.
- Gay and lesbian forums that discuss sexual experiences.
- Explorations of the geo-political causes of terrorism where specific terrorist organisations and propaganda are cited as reference material.
Yahoo also pointed to a recent paper that provided "several examples where knee jerk regulatory reactions to 'controversial' content have been entirely out of step with broader public opinion".
The Australian Federation of AIDS Organisations fears sites that are valuable to sexual health promotion might be placed on the blacklist.
"Social research has shown that information, 'chat' and even pornographic sites play an important role in providing information about sexuality and sexual health, particularly for men who have sex with men and same-sex attracted young people," it wrote.
Mark McLelland, an associate professor in the sociology program at the University of Wollongong, said the filters could block access to an entire genre of niche but popular Japanese animated fiction.
Even the Australian Christian Lobby, one of the biggest supporters of the internet filtering plan, said inadvertently adding innocuous content to the blacklist would "undermine the entire policy".
Telstra fears the blacklist of banned sites could be leaked - as has already occurred last year - and "could be used as a directory of harmful content, which would therefore become more easily available to users that are able to circumvent the ISP filter or who are located overseas".
Colin Jacobs, spokesman for online users' lobby group Electronic Frontiers Australia, said it was clear from the submissions that the vast majority have a difficult time stomaching the filter at all.
"Many of the submissions stated flat out that the filter was not needed," he said.
"Most of the rest held their noses and tried to come up with a way this inherently secret process could be made more transparent."

OBAMA: "Yes, we can"

Fiscal measures against the people of Greece and their unions affect Spain's relations with Latin America.Φορολογικά μέτρα εναντίον του λαού της Ελλάδα και των συνδικαλιστικών τους να επηρεάζουν τις σχέσεις της Ισπανίας με τη Λατινική Αμερική.

The crisis in Greece to reinforce the economic crisis affecting Spain and Spanish investment in the Caribbean and Latin America in the trade balance.

Fiscal measures to attempting to implement in Greece and Spain deposited the weight of economic crisis in the working and peasant masses of Europe and protect and guarantee the profits greedy and predatory elites for power.

The differences of classes in Greece and Spain will be abysmal as will be seen even at this stage through the Spanish state television itself affecting the image of Spain in our region, because the underlying problem in the European Union are not in the weakening the euro, but the social problems behind these wealthy society of Europe who observed long ago in politics of the new Victor Hughes caribbean, President Sarkozy

and his clash with French union finds a serious political problem in the French Caribbean we all know through the Caribbean leader Domota, the problem of Bekker, wealthy white descendants of slave owners in French Guyana, with a strong ideological and racist and colonial socioeconomic it is their family crest in the region .. .
Measurements of the European Union to resolve the crisis are far from the social measures and social commitment of the private companies that Obama performed as a strategy derived from the ideas of John Locke in America, and European political problem, hinder even more Latin American relations with Spain because of the weakening of trade relations, poverty, market and monetary flow in the Spanish population, the trade balance and the absence of social policies in the fiscal measures of the European Union.
The Caribbean and Latin America should discuss and analyze as soon as we can the prospects for trade, particularly with Spain as a regional economic bloc because Spain is, together with Portugal and Africa, our natural source of culture and knowledge and further, certainly in every international forum, a regional political and strategic partner.Gualterio Nunez Estrada, Sarasota, Florida, 34232.

PHISICIAN JHON LOCKE, LONDON, ENGLAND.

Deutsche Telekom, Pernod Brace for Deeper Greece, Spain Slump

March 21, 2010, 7:20 PM EDT

By Ragnhild Kjetland and Ladka Bauerova

March 22 (Bloomberg) -- Deutsche Telekom AG, Pernod Ricard SA and Lafarge SA are among companies bracing for shrinking demand as Greece, Spain, Portugal and Ireland tighten their belts to slash budget deficits.
Austerity programs in these countries may deepen slides in revenue in the region for companies already facing a fragile rebound. For now, executives at 67 percent of 18 large European companies surveyed by Bloomberg say they see revenue this year from these countries unchanged or slightly better than in 2009. Still, declines in incomes and spending, already evident late last year, will worsen, some company officials said.
“In the second half, household income in the region did go down, many moved to prepay and they became more price sensitive,” Guido Kerkhoff, a board member at Deutsche Telekom, the biggest shareholder of Greece’s Hellenic Telecommunications Organization SA, said in Bonn on March 18, alluding to south and eastern Europe. “Customers will be more cautious than before.”
From phone calls, wine and clothes to cement and cars, demand for goods and services is set to cool in these countries this year, analysts and economists said. Lafarge, the world’s largest cement maker, sees sales volume of the construction material falling as much as 8 percent in Greece and 15 percent in Spain. Pernod Ricard, the world’s second-largest liquor maker with brands such as Chivas Regal whiskey and Absolut vodka, faces a “difficult” market in Spain, which has among the largest household-debt burdens in the euro area.
Economic Gloom

“The situation is getting tougher,” said Olivier Cavil, a spokesman for Pernod Ricard. Spain is the second-largest export market behind the U.S. for the Paris-based company. Irish demand has “declined dramatically,” hurt by the faltering economy and a severe contraction in consumer confidence, he said.
Efforts by countries to reduce their budget gaps to calm markets and satisfy European Union limits they’ve breached, may tip all or parts of the 16-nation euro-sharing economy into a double-dip recession, economists say.

“Fiscal measures will definitely have strong repercussions on economic growth,” said Luca Mezzomo, head of economic research at Intesa Sanpaolo SpA in Milan. “The effects of the measures will be particularly harsh on consumer spending as they will cut disposable income and increase prices.”
Greece is seeking to raise taxes and slash wages to narrow its budget gap, which at 12.7 percent of gross domestic product was the EU’s biggest in 2009. Ireland, with a budget gap at 11.7 percent, is cutting government workers’ wages and welfare benefits.
‘Fragile Recovery’
Portugal is selling state assets to cut its deficit, currently more than three times the EU limit of 3 percent of GDP. Spain is struggling to recover from the worst recession in six decades. Its economy, reeling from the collapse of a decade- long construction boom, has been contracting since the second quarter of 2008. At 19 percent, Spain has the highest unemployment rate in the euro region.
“Some European countries potentially need a bailout, which is a clear threat to the fragile recovery in our European markets,” said Bernd Scheifele, chief executive officer of HeidelbergCement AG, the world’s third-largest cement maker, according to a company presentation in London last week.
HeidelbergCement rival Lafarge, based in Paris, expects cement sales volume to fall 3 percent to 8 percent in Greece this year with prices holding stable or rising slightly. In Spain, the company said the volume of sales will slide between 10 percent and 15 percent even as prices fall.
Consuming Less
For Paris-based Carrefour SA, Europe’s biggest retailer, like-for-like sales in Spain, which represents 15 percent of revenue, slid 7 percent last year and CEO Lars Olofsson said he didn’t expect any change in the consumer environment this year. The decline in Spain largely stemmed from food deflation that “remains strong” and a drop in consumption, Carrefour said. In Greece, which accounts for 2.9 percent of revenue, like-for-like sales fell 4.5 percent.
U.K. retailer Marks & Spencer Group Plc said “trading conditions continue to be difficult” in Greece. The company has 30 stores in the country, making Greece its second-biggest international franchise after Turkey. Marks & Spencer gets 90 percent of its revenue from the U.K.
Greece remains the immediate concern. Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou on March 18 set a one-week deadline for the EU to craft a financial aid mechanism for Greece, saying he may then turn to the International Monetary Fund.
Domestic Demand
While his government said on March 10 that the economy may shrink more than 0.8 percent this year, Deutsche Bank forecasts the contraction could be “substantially” greater -- 4 percent in 2010, twice last year’s pace.
The larger concern is that Greece’s debt woes may spread. As unease over Greece’s ability to pay its debts spills over into other countries, the risk premium on Spanish and Portuguese bonds has surged along with that on Greek securities. The Spanish government, battling the third-largest budget deficit in the region, plans to raise value-added tax.
“Given the scale of the austerity measures that Spain, Greece, Ireland and some other countries are undertaking, there is little doubt domestic demand will be significantly dampened,” said Silvio Peruzzo, an economist at Royal Bank of Scotland Group Plc in London.
‘Great Opportunity’
Some companies may gain from the current woes in Greece, said Christos Pitelis, director of the Centre for International Business and Management at Cambridge.
“One could take the cynical view, which is that this could be a great opportunity to buy some Greek companies at good prices,” he said.
Deutsche Telekom, which posted a fourth-quarter loss primarily on a writedown in the value of its Greek unit, is offering to raise its stake in the entity.
The Bonn-based company, which owns about 30 percent of Hellenic Telecommunications, paid 3.8 billion euros for the stake that is now valued at about 1.31 billion euros based on Hellenic’s stock price. Deutsche Telekom said it would be interested in raising its stake if the government were to sell more of the company. The Greek government owns 20 percent.
“The Greek government has the option of selling another stake to us,” Deutsche Telekom Chief Executive Officer Rene Obermann said this month. “It’s up to the Greek government but we’re ready to talk. We’ll certainly look at it with interest.”
