NAM NEWS NETWORK Feb 1st, 2010 HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 29 (acn) The Cuban Minister of the Basic Industry, Yadira Garcia, said on Thursday that the implementation of measures to save conventional energy and its efficient exploitation, as well as the increase in the use of renewable sources of energy, are top priorities for the present year.

HAVANA, Feb 1 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) – The Cuban Deputy Minister of Higher Education Rodolfo Alarcon said that the diversity of views on the role of universities in society will highlight discussions during an international congress on universities here Feb 8 to 12.
There are different approaches and it is a complicated issue on how to get the commitment of universities with their environments, said Alarcon.
Rectors of Argentina, Central America, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Dominican Republic and Russia will meet with their Cuban counterparts during the congress.
The congress is also expected to devote part of discussions on the evaluation and accreditation of studies, he said in vew of the global emergence of private universities.
“The event will highlight the differences between rich and poor countries and the diversity of approaches as well as the injustices that still affect the least developed ones, said Alarcon.
As part of the programme, 30 courses will be offered on issues related to the operation of universities and there will also be lectures by ministers and Cuban officials on the economic and social reality of the Caribbean island.
At least 14 workshops will also be in session, including one on the advisory board of post-graduate courses in Latin America and others in higher education and university extension.
There will be a meeting of foreign graduates in Cuba, a scientific students research workshop and forums of professional and students organisations, he added. — NNN-PRENSA LATINA
