The Latin American children between 10 and 18 years prefer to surf the internet than sitting watching television. And here are the consequences: children with less ability to concentrate and deepen, who "trivialized" the concept of friendship and in some cases are addicted to the network.
So strong was Sádaba Charo, a professor at the University of Navarre and coauthor of the book "The interactive generation in Latin America", which collects over 80,000 surveys in six Latin American countries to respond to questions from readers of BBC MUNDO.
However, the expert stressed that cases of addiction are minority and that the internet has also brought positive consequences, such as young people are reading and writing than ever before.
Therefore, according to her, this technology should be seen as an opportunity to create a generation smarter than the previous one, although it is too early to know if this will happen.
The expert responded this way to questions from readers:

I noticed, through my teaching practice in nearly three decades, that students do not improve their performance by giving more time to use electronic means, and that the quantity and quality of reading and the possibilities of decreasing abstraction. Dario Arredondo, Hermosillo, Mexico.

I agree that we still do not have keys to the tracks and make use of internet reverse in better education for children. But that can only be attributed disentiría negative things.

All children are reading a lot, consuming a lot of information they read online and are also writing a lot. I do not know whether more or less as before, but we can not say that is not read or write to have internet.

I think generations to come will be much more intelligent by providing early stimulation all these new tecnologías.Francis, Panama.

The technology does not make us smarter, give us more access to information and the information is not equal to knowledge. We have more information and not know it at all. Minors are in a better position to take advantage of all the stimuli that are around you, that if we use well-educated can make a difference.

Are you seeing this effect?

Not yet, too early and we have not yet succeeded in giving an educational response to this generation are using this technology, there is a slight delay in the training of teachers, parents ... What I notice is that teachers are more children are scattered, with less ability to concentrate and deepen, but that is not only because of technology but failure by harnessing technology.

Can we reverse this in the future?

I am an optimistic, especially given the concern that parents and teachers are showing on this issue.

How can I make my daughter 11 years to understand the disadvantages of being more than reasonable time compared to the internet? I think it is addictive, gets angry when I ask who is only two hours a day. Lesbia Briceno, Caracas, Venezuela.

It is an interesting concern. Moderation is that parents are right to demand the use of internet is the same as in the use of anything else available to them. For example, do not spend five or six in front of the TV, or do not eat much chocolate as possible. There must be an order in Internet usage, which may be an hour, two hours a day, what the parents see fit.

For me two hours is enough for most children in their daily schedule to make that sport is also important. Luis, Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela.

I would not dare to say what is the limit. In some cases it is two hours long and not in others. For example, a child living in a large Latin American city that spends many hours away from home and takes a long time to get to school, passing two hours on the internet are long hours, have to spend time with your brothers, your family, study ... Parents need to ensure that children have variety in their diet of media and leisure activities.

So what the Company believes that the United States of Pediatrics warns that spend more than two hours a day online can be harmful to children?

Two hours may be the strip from which it can be bad for vision, headaches, passive situation of being at a computer. But they say that time is two hours, may be more, we must apply common sense.

Is internet addiction?

And of course there are children who have serious problems, but do not cease to be minority cases that often respond to children who are having other problems that are manifested in the use of internet as they could demonstrate otherwise, and sometimes means communication give too much importance.

Does the use of internet is generating other reactions?

In the survey we asked them to children who value things like whether they feel more welcome, or if you know someone who is isolated by using internet. And yes, knowing that they recognize some cases but not a majority recognition.

Experience teaches me to believe that Internet use among young people between 12 and 18 years old focuses on three areas: using chat, games, dominated by violence and pornography. César García, Maracay, Venezuela.

With data in hand, I agree only the first of the three premises. Minors are using the Internet mainly to communicate with each other. Is the chat, but also social networks that are dislodged at least in Europe chat.

I disagree that violent games are another of his great preference, I think so but tell us they play their favorite games are sports games and strategy. And pornography, they also state access adult content, but in no country have gone from 8-10%.

I am concerned how it affects interpersonal relationships of adolescents and older stop learning manual skills such as sewing, weaving, carpentry, painting, music ... Mercedes, Argentina.

One of the worrying consequences of the use that children are making the Internet is the trivialization of the concept of friendship. Learn skills that we did not learn, but there are skills that if not practiced not learn, such as face to face contact between humans, understand the body language of people who not only can communicate through text and images.

These skills are being reduced but is not yet widespread, it is early to know whether what is happening now is whether or not a consolidated basis.

Will it be viable effective regulation of harmful content that is handled in the network? Daniel Rangel, Merida, Venezuela.

It is difficult because it is half in a global reality where the laws are local or national, it would be desirable but it is complicated. In fact, now own the telecom operators are starting to self-regulate. The comprehensive legislation is very complicated. Meanwhile, parents have access to the content filters.
