Wilmington, DelawareFriday, May 08, 2009 @ 02:41 PM EDT
Wilmington, DE - The American Cancer Society, the largest non-government, not-for-profit funding source of cancer research in the United States, recognized current and former recipients of Society research funding at a luncheon held at the Chase Center on the Wilmington Riverfront. The event also provided the organization with an opportunity to showcase the impact Society-funded research has made on the cancer burden in Delaware.
Heather Bittner-Fagan, MD and Sigrid Rajasekaran, PhD, two researchers currently funded by the American Cancer Society, were recognized for their efforts. Dr. Bittner-Fagan, a physician and director of health services research at Christiana Care Health System, is the recipient of a $300,000 Society research and training grant that is expected to help scientists better understand the roles obesity, race and gender play in the early detection of colorectal cancer. Dr. Rajasekaran, head of the cancer cell metabolism laboratory at Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, has received a $720,000 Society research grant to study the mechanism of increased function of growth factors in cancer cells, specific to bladder cancer. Both Drs. Bittner-Fagan and Rajasekaran briefly described their research efforts at the Society luncheon.
The researchers were introduced by William Phelps, PhD, director of the extramural grants department at the American Cancer Society. Dr. Phelps shared the impact the Society-funded research has made in the progress against cancer after Patricia P. Hoge, RN, PhD, chief mission officer for the Society, shared the impact Society-funded research has made against the cancer burden in Delaware.
Steve Forbes, a cancer survivor from Townsend, Del., spoke during the latter portion of the event and shared his own personal experience with the disease and how survivors are impacted by the research funded by the Society.
The American Cancer Society’s Research and Training Program has funded 42 Nobel laureates since its inception in 1946, during which time it has invested more than $3.2 billion in cancer research, much of that focusing on the work of promising new investigators. Currently the Society invests more than $489 million in 982 grants to researchers across the United States. With the support of the American Cancer Society, researchers like Drs. Bittner-Fagan and Rajasekaran are focusing on new discoveries to help achieve the Society’s goal of eliminating cancer as a major health problem.

When 60% of bankruptcies occur on hospital costs, and families lose their credit, they lose even better job positions that can not hold if they do not have good credit and become a burden on the state, in many cases increasing negative demographic indicators in American society, even under an expensive and poor health care. The lives of millions of American families is unfortunate and a poor future due to an illness. As in the old west where a skilled con man, went from town to town, selling for a dollar a bottle of that potion to grow hair, today, almost two centuries later, the industry thrives miracle cures to cancer patients, for little money. Such trickery called alternative treatments, usually make the cancer patient refuses to receive treatment prescribed by doctors hoping the powers of the shaman or guru who claims to have supernatural formulas. This behavior which negates the role of medical science is a social drama too common today, in Northern America, where it rains on wet and is causing alarm in the American Medical As this article on the front page of the Sarasota Herald Tribune "Gualterio Nunez Estrada, Sarasota, Florida, 34233.

TAMPA - With much of her lower body consumed by cancer, Leslee Flasch finally faced the truth: The herbal supplements and special diet were not working.
"(...).Studies estimate that 60 percent of cancer patients try unconventional remedies and about 40 percent take vitamin or dietary supplements, which do not have to be proved safe or effective and are not approved by the federal Food and Drug Administration."
"The Internet fuels this trend by letting people buy direct and bypass doctors who could help them see through scams and misleading claims of scientific proof. Sadly, some Web sites are run by quacks -- a "doctor" title does not mean the remedy is safe or effective."
Examples of potential harm:(in dietary suplement by the counter).
