the Caribbean agenda might be submerged at the next Summit of Las Americas in Trinidad

Founder of independent discussion forum the Roxborough Institute, Dr Peter Phillips (right) has the attention of, from left, Observer Executive Editor-Operations Desmond Allen, Executive Editor-Publications Vernon Davidson and Senior Associate Editor Pete Sankey at a specially arranged forum with Observer reporters and editors yesterday. "There has been very little expression by Caribbean governments going into the Summit of their positions and their plans for the way forward out of this crisis," he said. "There is in the Caribbean almost a deafening silence in terms of what it is we want out of this Summit and what we would want to articulate."
"...concern over what he says is the 'deafening silence' of the Caribbean leaders regarding what thery hope to achieve from the talks."
"Phillips also said the tailoring of International Monetary Fund (IMF) conditionalities to benefit poorer countries was another area on which the Caribbean needed to reach a collective position."
