WHO's Chan: 3.5 Million Tamiflu Doses In WHO Stock; Talking To Roche
ZURICH -(Dow Jones)- The World Health Organization Wednesday said it holds roughly 3.5 million doses of Tamiflu, produced by Swiss drug company Roche Holding AG (ROG.VX), and is in talks to ramp up capacity to fight swine flu.
Basel-based Roche's Tamiflu has proven effective in treating swine flu, but stocks held "clearly aren't enough," WHO's director-general, Dr. Margaret Chan, said on a media call.

Manufacturers warned on Wednesday that limited stocks of a future swine flu vaccine could be distributed on a “first come, first served” basis, leaving hundreds of millions of people in poorer countries without protection.
Andrin Oswald from Novartis, one of the world’s top flu vaccine producers, told the Financial Times his company had already allocated more than a fifth of its total capacity for making a future pandemic vaccine to governments, including the US and the UK.,dwp_uuid=819fc44c-33e2-11de-9eea-00144feabdc0.html?nclick_check=1

The epidemic had its origins in the raising of pigs and the strain is known since 1999.

Swine flu was the result of interaction between different viruses in pigs, says expert 10:22 29 / 04 / 2009 Novosibirsk (Russia), April 29, RIA Novosti.

Swine flu, according to latest estimates, and caused 159 casualties in Mexico is the result of an interaction between two different viruses in the body of the pigs, says Professor DROZDOV Ilia, head of the Russian Center of Virology and Biotechnology "Vektor" . "There was an interaction with another virus, human or pig, in the body of pigs," said the researcher to add that participated in this process, with a high dose of probability, the H1N2 virus, a strain isolated in veterinary experts 1999 and monitored for some time in the hog. " "It was a new type, a new virus particles can affect the human body, found. That has arisen this novel form is, in his view, "a regular phenomenon already observed in the past in Nature and in the human population."

Egypt orders slaughter of all pigs over swine flu

Wednesday, April 29, 2009

(04-29) 09:25 PDT CAIRO, Egypt (AP) --

Egypt began slaughtering the roughly 300,000 pigs in the country Wednesday as a precaution against swine flu even though no cases have been reported here, infuriating farmers who blocked streets and stoned vehicles of Health Ministry workers who came to carry out the government's order.

The measure was a stark expression of the panic the deadly outbreak is spreading around the world, especially in poor countries with weak public health systems. Egypt responded similarly a few years ago to an outbreak of bird flu, which is endemic to the country and has killed two dozen people.

At one large pig farming center just north of Cairo, scores of angry farmers blocked the street to prevent Health Ministry workers in trucks and bulldozers from coming in to slaughter the animals. Some pelted the vehicles with rocks and shattered their windshields and the workers left without killing any pigs.

"We remind Hosni Mubarak that we are all Egyptians. Where does he want us to go?" said Gergis Faris, a 46-year-old pig farmer in another part of Cairo who collects garbage to feed his animals. "We are uneducated people, just living day by day and trying to make a living, and now if our pigs are taken from us without compensation, how are we supposed to live?"

Most in the Muslim world consider pigs unclean animals and do not eat pork because of religious restrictions. One Islamic militant Web site carried comments Wednesday saying swine flu was God's revenge against "infidels."

Pigs are banned entirely in some Muslim countries including Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Libya. However in other parts of the Muslim world, they are often raised by religious minorities who can eat pork.

In Jordan, the government decided Wednesday to shut down the country's five pig farms, involving 800 animals, for violating public health safety regulations. Half the pigs will be killed and the rest will be relocated to areas away from the population, officials said.

In Egypt, pigs are raised and consumed mainly by the Christian minority, which some estimates put at 10 percent of the population. Health Ministry spokesman Abdel-Rahman Shaheen estimated there are between 300,000-350,000 pigs in Egypt.

"It has been decided to immediately start slaughtering all the pigs in Egypt using the full capacity of the country's slaughterhouses," Health Minister Hatem el-Gabaly told reporters after a Cabinet meeting with President Hosni Mubarak.

Global health experts said the mass slaughter of pigs is entirely unnecessary and a waste of resources. But Egypt's reaction was colored by its experiences with bird flu.

Bird flu started sweeping through poultry populations across Asia in 2003 and then jumped to humans, killing more than 250 worldwide.

Egypt was among the countries hardest hit. According to the World Health Organization, it has the world's fourth highest death toll — after Indonesia, Vietnam and China — and the largest outside of Asia. WHO has confirmed 23 deaths in Egypt and Egyptian authorities have reported three more deaths in recent weeks.

Chickens used to roam every dusty street in every village across Egypt, and many of its city alleys too. But when the disease first appeared here in February 2006, 25 million birds were killed within weeks, devastating the poultry sector and particularly the family farmers. Chickens nearly all vanished from sight, slaughtered, abandoned or locked away by a population increasingly aware of, and frightened by, the disease's stubborn grip.

The latest measure appeared designed to avert a similar panic.

Swine flu is blamed for more than 150 deaths in Mexico and U.S. health officials reported on Wednesday the first known death outside Mexico — a 23-month-old Mexican boy in Texas. It has spread to Europe, Asia and Israel, which shares a border with Egypt.

Experts suspect swine flu, a strange new mix of pig, bird and human flu virus, originated with pigs then jumped to humans and is now spreading through human-to-human contact. Health authorities have said you cannot contract the flu by eating pork.

"It is unfortunate," the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization Chief Veterinary Officer Joseph Domenech said of Egypt's decision. "The crisis today is in transmission from human to human. It has nothing to do with pigs," he told The Associated Press.

In the northern suburbs of Cairo Wednesday, health authorities killed 250 pigs and buried them. Angry farmers demanded compensation and provincial governors paid them around 1,000 Egyptian pounds (about $180) per head. The farmers asked for an official government decision to set a price for each pig slaughtered.

Agriculture Minister Amin Abaza told reporters that farmers would be allowed to sell the pork meat so there would be no need for compensation.

We must change our eating habits if we want to be healthier and more stable economies.

We must avoid at all costs that a not prevented pandemic may cause an economic collapse with worse consequences, the states and the big transnationals must joint in his effort to suppoort phisicians around the world.

The main strategy of prevention in hospitals and emergency rooms are severe cases, children under twelve years old and pregnant women. It is vital to avoid congestion hospital as a precautionary measure.

According to my experience in Cuba with swine fever and the current risk to humans and the global economy of a pandemic caused by the raising of pigs I think we should go into our thinking of changing eating habits, especially in sensitive economic areas. Moreover, breeding pigs require high hygiene and prevention than ever achieved in poor countries and it takes no less than three days in the gut causing in many cases severe gastrointestinal complications. The habit of pork in Cuba has caused losses to the economy of billions of dollars by pandemics in terms of raising these animals. Currently ninety percent of the people of Cuba have helicobacter pilori and pork is suspected of being one of their main source because even raise pigs in urban and buildings. A toilet is much cleaner than a barnyard pig.

I believe that preventive measures are most suitable to contain the possibility of a pandemic due to Roche, for example, would not have drugs on a large scale until eight months from now so that in countries with universal health wards emergency should only address severe cases, as well as hospitals to avoid a shortage of medical personnel and supplies. Care in polyclinics and at home should be prioritized and the neighborhoods where they are declared to be cordoned contagion and quarantine declared universal care with state residents. Pigs and animals have to be opportunistic receivers away from populated areas and areas for rearing pigs strictly monitored. In countries without universal health insurance primary physicians should be placed on alert for any symptoms of their patients or residents of neighborhoods that, then became their patients without health insurance until he alert phase is happens and must be supported by the entire apparatus of Health and Corporations involved in the economy of the nation to prevent hospitalization or the emergency room, very clear in every hospital must be. The uninsured detected by the primary physician to receive visits from nurses and doctors in their homes and observe the hygiene conditions of housing and its relationship with animals receiving the virus that can not even pay for the consultation, the state and Corporation of the economy must pay the physician on alert.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the masks actually don't do much good. In fact, the U.S. has made a point of not recommending their usage.
In fact, some doctors warn they might even be harmful, causing people to take risks — like venturing into crowds or neglecting to wash hands — in the mistaken belief that the mask protects them.
Experts say people who come in close contact with known swine flu patients should wear high filtration masks like those used by health professionals, which are more effective but also more expensive (about 12 pesos or a dollar) and generally unavailable in Mexico City. But even these masks, which filter out fine particles carried in the air, must be used properly to give real protection.
However, some say one of the benefits of the masks is to help people feel more safe during a situation that is largely out of their control. And in a country that is tightly in the grip of a scary epidemic, that solace may be no small thing.

Macau, HK, China join hands in swine flu prevention efforts

Wednesday, 29 April 2009
Local health officials held a video conference yesterday with their counterparts in mainland China and Hong Kong to discuss preventive measures against swine influenza, which had spread rapidly and claimed lives in several countries, but there is no suspected case of swine flu in Macau. The World Health Organisation (WHO) described the situation as a "public health emergency" that deserves international attention and has raised the status of the pandemic alert level III to level IV, indicating that inter-human transmission has occurred.During the video conference, the health officials assessed the development of the virus, shared knowledge and discussed quarantine arrangements, as well as drugs, vaccine, and speed test for the virus. In addition, they agreed to build a contact list to jointly facilitate information exchanges to help prevent the possible pandemic. Firector of the Macau Health Bureau, Lei Chin Ion, director of the Conde S. Januário Hospital, Chan Wai Sin, and experts from Macau’s Centre for Disease Control and Prevention took part in the meeting. The health authorities continue to urge the health, educational and social welfare institutions and the public to follow the guidelines issued by the government and individuals are also reminded to maintain good personal hygiene. A round-the-clock hotline of the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (853-28561122), has been set up for enquiries. Furthermore, in order to effectively prevent the outbreak of swine flu in Macau, the Social Welfare Bureau (IAS) will support social facilities to take preventive measures, through early detection of infected cases and co-operation with the Health Bureau regarding monitoring and treatment. The IAS will organise Monday two explanatory sessions to its staff members and social facilities workers, with Leong Iek Hou from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. In addition, the government will hold a meeting tomorrow for clarification on the outbreak of swine flu and what precautions can be taken at the Health Bureau Administration Building Auditorium from 1.30 pm to 2.30 pm. The meeting will be chaired by Tong Ka Io, co-ordinator of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and open for all health professionals in Macau.

Roche steps up preparedness level over swine flu.Alert/

Wed Apr 29, 2009 7:28am EDT
ZURICH (Reuters) - Swiss drugmaker Roche Holding AG said Wednesday it was working closely with the World Health Organization to make its Tamiflu drug available to patients following the outbreak of swine flu.
Roche said in a statement it had increased its preparedness level after the WHO increased its pandemic alert level, saying it was collaborating with the WHO and governments to fight a potential pandemic.
Roche reiterated it had donated 5 million packs of Tamiflu to the WHO, including 3 million packs in a "rapid response" stockpile that can be deployed at the request of the WHO.
In the past, it said it has also fulfilled government pandemic orders amounting to 220 million treatment courses.
A Roche spokeswoman said governments had contacted Roche about new orders since the outbreak but could not quantify them.
Roche said Monday it was working on scaling up production of Tamiflu, but cautioned that the lead time for the drug from synthesis of the product to packaging was eight months.
Tamiflu, or oseltamivir, is given as a convenient tablet, and was originally invented by U.S. biotech company Gilead Sciences Inc.

WHO: emergency "scientific review" in Geneva, Italy.

WHO calls emergency meeting; eyes pandemic level
1 hour ago
GENEVA (AP) — The World Health Organization
is calling a third emergency meeting of its flu experts in response to a spike in swine flu cases.
The panel meeting Wednesday will discuss the current alert level — at phase 4, two levels below the threshold for a full pandemic outbreak.
In response to the panel's earlier advice, WHO declared the outbreak an international public health emergency and raised its pandemic alert level, meaning the risk of a global outbreak has jumped.
WHO spokesman Dick Thompson said the agency's director-general Margaret Chan "has seen a jump in cases and she wants to have that evaluated by the outside experts."
He says that does not automatically mean there will be a change in the pandemic alert level. This comes in addition to a WHO scientific review meeting, also on Wednesday.
THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.
The World Health Organization was holding an emergency "scientific review" Wednesday of the swine flu outbreak to determine exactly what is known about how the disease spreads, how it affects human health and how it can be treated.
Experts will take part via telephone from the United States, Mexico and other countries where people have been infected by swine flu. The U.N. health body said a report will be published shortly after the meeting.
Swine flu is suspected of killing more than 150 people in Mexico and sickening over 2,400 there.
WHO has confirmed 105 cases of swine flu in seven countries. Over half of those — 66 — are in the United States, but Mexico is the only country where deaths have been confirmed.
Dr. Nikki Shindo, a WHO flu expert taking part in the meeting, said medical experts are still trying to determine just how dangerous the virus is.
"Swine virus has been found occasionally in human beings," she said. "The one thing we don't really understand is why the cases in Mexico are so severe."
WHO is looking into whether the Mexican cases involve underlying medical conditions that have caused people there to fare worse than patients elsewhere in the world, she said.
In the United States, all patients have been listed as recovered or recovering.
Shindo told The Associated Press that "hundreds of thousands" of people in Mexico could theoretically be infected with swine flu even if they are showing no or only mild symptoms.
In the past, most swine flu patients have shown only mild symptoms, and the disease tends to be far less serious in humans and animals than the bird flu virus that has infected at least 421 people and killed 257 in the last six years.
Partly for that reason, much of the global preparations for a possible pandemic had focused on bird flu.
Shindo said it was important to keep in mind that even normal flu outbreaks kill people. In poor countries such as Madagascar and Congo, outbreaks of seasonal influenza have infected up to half of the population, with mortality rates reaching 1 percent of the entire nation.
Shindo said the WHO meeting Wednesday would begin to address the urgent need to "look at the clinical and epidemiological data from this disease." Only then, she said, can health experts begin to answer the biggest question: "How serious this virus will be?"
The meeting will focus particularly on a large trove of data coming from Mexico, believed to be the epicenter of the virus, and from New York City, where a smaller outbreak has infected people.
Shindo said the outbreak linked to students at St. Francis Preparatory school in Queens is an important case study that "will help us understand how the virus is spread, it's incubation period and the severity of infection."
She said doctors expect to have a much fuller understanding of how the swine flu virus infects people by the end of the week.
"The tricky thing is the virus will evolve very, very quickly, so we have to continuously monitor it," she said. "We have to receive sequential samples from cases and we have to exchange information among the countries that already have cases to monitor the change of the virus."
Shindo said WHO affiliates around the world will also consider a request from the Food and Agriculture Organization to stop calling the disease swine flu, since the virus is not food-borne and has nothing to do with eating pork.
On Wednesday, U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack suggested a new name, arguing that swine flu suggests a problem with pork products. China, Russia and Ukraine are among the countries who have banned pork imports from Mexico and parts of the United States affected by swine flu.

The fiscal indiscipline in the state of Florida and how the Caribbean countries must act accordingly.

We must prepare for the immediate investment of capital from Korea in Florida, and be aware of what happens.
It is vital that we have a look at the philosophy of economics and energy based on fiscal indiscipline in the region to ensure common capital Korean arrivals to the caribbeans and also to invest in Florida, our main goal.Controling narcotrafic, human traffiking and reinforcing the police and auditors is vital in the area for ours small caribbean countries always monitoring Florida behavior.
We, The Caribbean countries, can not expect us to spend what is happening in Mexico for the weak attitude of their rulers and the poor political and ideological education of some representatives of the Mexican intellectual elite who live behind their own people. It should be clarified that there is no contradiction between the working classes and peasants of Mexico and United States, the problem is inside the mexican elite of intellectuals whos political education falls short of its responsibility to America area, even, during decades, with respect to the internal problems of United States and particularly Florida .Mexico is paying today the duck for his ideological weakness based on mispicks in the culture of the Mexican Revolution, the more stronger and historical in the America area, north and south, Canada to Patagonia.
We have a balance in Mexico that does not go well and I think we should work with the working class and peasant in Mexico in terms of their culture, ideology and political education necessary because we must eliminate any tension between the working class and rural Americans and the Mexican labor movement. Tensions between homologous classes are the basis of economic weakness and lead to more exploitation and less profit because the money does not flow, not reversed, nor labor markets are created. Rather, they accumulate more and more capital in few hands and the economy freezes. We need more political education in the Mexican intellectuals because they depend on them to follow the line and work with the working class for American intellectuals of the South and the Party.
Currently we have an overwhelming amount of capital from England and Canada without exit in an alley in Florida, are behind the Arab capitals, behind the Japanese, then Korean may be, but none has even set foot on landing, even a control tower and this is a serious obstacle, as I confirmed my Argentine friends who advise lawyers reinsurer* in Zurich, (Bank of the Worker) in Switzerland, for investment in the Caribbean and Florida.
*It is scheduled the closure of severals shopping centers in Sarasota by bankrrupcy, Florida retail in the midweast and the fast food companies that wanted to expand in Tampa have failed in three months and they are all near to collpsed. (industry tertiary and retail area Sarasota to Tampa)Now, with the pandemia in Mexico the impact will becaem worst for caribbean area closing bussines operation Mexico-Florida with very higth chain of bankrrupcy in the little and midled companies. There are a danger of colapsing economy because the sanitary control don't have a infraestructure in the Health System of Florida that doesn't work for everybody. The vaccination in Florida es very primitive and the hospital infraestructure and nursery can't support the impact of a pandemia. The inversionist are putting the money safe outside the area as soon as possible, until we see what would happens)
I wonder if a solution is to allow the Mint to the Bank of England to issue more paper money to the brake means certain areas of investment in the absence of a universal public health infrastructure as in Canada or Cuba that reinsurer* in Switzerland will take into account, even in Japan and Korea. This is my experience in my personal interchange of ideas with europeans bankers, bussinesman and exporter from Egipt and arab jeques about investments in the caribbean area.*(Florida-caribbeans)

IRS says set to pursue "other banks" on tax evasion
Mon Apr 27, 2009 4:33pm EDT
By Tom Brown
MIAMI (Reuters) - The U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is preparing to pursue other foreign banks for allegedly facilitating tax evasion by wealthy Americans following its high-profile case against Switzerland's UBS AG (UBSN.VX) (UBS.N), an IRS official said on Monday.
UBS, Switzerland's largest bank, in February acknowledged that it helped U.S. clients conceal assets from the U.S. government. It agreed to pay a $780 million fine and identify some of its American clients.#
One way, usual, to evade tax is to have a small business in Miami and another fr, very large, in a Latin American country with another licenced paying to local very corrupted authorities to establish an export business to Spain or Portugal and so can launder money by banks transfer free of sin coming to Switzerland. Swiss bankers are often caught without fault for that money from the Caribbean Sea"s pirates because United States does not monitor, never, the conduct of its citizens abroad. Nobody paid to Swiss bankers to be Sherlock Holmes, nor do they have to pay for the impunity of the economic crime, or tolerance of other states. We can not abusing of Switzerland.
The brave people, educated of Switzerland, very humanitarian deserves more respect on our part. I devoted, personally, the high ethics and morals of Swiss bankers and the simplest of its citizens who risked national security of the Nation to save Jews from the camps concentracion during the Second World War. Value to me is the proof of the citizens of Switzerland, his high sense of humanitarian difficult to overcome.Gualterio Nunez Estrada, Sarasota, Florida, 34233.

(*)The health system is to Americans as the feudal system of housing linked to the stock market and the credit. Jose Marti had already criticized the system of renting houses in Northern America as a backward feudal society in the United States that they believed hindered the development of American society as a tare SOCIOECONOMIC linked to the psychology of Wall Street who called Marti " North, scrambled and brutal, "meaning the financial relations of imperialist and predatory character".

In my view and my own experience over 13 years in the United States of America's health system and housing goes against the very idea of the charter to ensure the happiness of the people, in reality only the rich can be the luxury of gambling on employment, housing and health in Wall Sreet. The poor countries of the Caribbean must guarantee to every citizen as a fundamental right: housing, health, labor, education and culture, it is autodestrucive, and you can be easy crushed by American domestic crises that are only appeased because they never cured the source of the disease just use aspirin to reduce fever and to keep the aspirations of the rich. Never make investigations of social ills, and never approach the problem in science, only the legal standard.

José Martí and Karl Marx in the nineteenth century agreed on the critical nature of capitalism and the nature of their socio-economic relations primitive. Marti spoke of housing and Marx more feudal burdens of credit and to this day clash with the same problem exaggerated by a health system that does not work even for people with insurance.

We must have like small countries the economic philosofy to confront this problems that some economist knows as "OWENS CRYSIS" inside the "rerum natura" of the capitalist way of production that we are in the global economy.

That would have to take it into account because there is a Triangle of Bermuda in the global economy in the demographic socioeconomic relation Mexico-Florida-Caribbean with its epicenter in Florida Midweast to Tampa Port and must be deeply investigate this consideration carefully observed by the Swiss Confederation in reasuguradoras ago years ago when I discussed with them in Havana and Santiago de Cuba, the same problem that we have today.

Gaza talk rescheduled at Clark UNIVERSITY

WORCESTER — Acknowledging “the process could have been better,” Clark University President John Bassett has approved rescheduling the appearance of a controversial scholar and author whose talk he had canceled two weeks ago. After learning earlier this month that the Students for Palestinian Rights planned to bring Norman Finkelstein to campus Thursday, the first night of a university-sponsored Holocaust and genocide studies conference, Mr. Bassett nixed the student organization’s plans. The son of Jewish parents who survived concentration camps during World War II, Mr. Finkelstein has written and spoken about a “Holocaust industry” that he believes exploits the memory of the Holocaust. He has also argued that the genocide is overused to justify Israeli behavior in the conflict with Palestinians. The cancellation of Mr. Finkelstein’s talk, advertised as “The Gaza Massacre,” upset the Students for Palestinian Rights and others who believed the decision violated academic freedom. The Students for Palestinian rights circulated petitions and organized a protest rally, and the American Civil Liberties Union sent Mr. Bassett a letter disagreeing with his decision.

Independent media and Gaza: When the mainstream is M .I.A.
Major international media networks failed to cover the war from the ground in the Gaza Strip, as Israel barred international reporters from entering the besieged territory for the majority of the conflict. As global news networks including CNN and the BBC had no permanent correspondents on the ground in Gaza, major media institutions covered the conflict from the outside, reporting on the war from hilltops in Israel.
For the first time viewers internationally turned to alternative news for accurate and direct coverage from Gaza. International attention turned towards Al Jazeera’s international English language service, which facilitated the ability for Palestinian reporters and civilians to tell their own story on Gaza to an international audience for the first time.

In the U.S. independent media programs such as Democracy Now! stood as an important counterpoint to mainstream media coverage which in North America maintained a clear pro-Israel slant.

Recently Anjali Kamat, a journalist and producer at Democracy Now!, the widely syndicated TV and radio program based in New York City, visited the Gaza Strip and offered reflections on the scale of the destruction in Gaza, the points of focus today among Gaza’s population struggling to rebuild, from the tunnel trade to agriculture and reflections on the increasing focus on alternative media coverage on Palestine.

Stefan Christoff: Could you offer your reflections on the current situation on the ground in Gaza, just three months after Israel launched the major military offensive. What’s the picture on the ground?

Anjali Kamat: All this talk of reconstruction is a striking contrast to the reality. There was the major reconstruction conference in Egypt earlier this month and millions in aid from around the world was pledged toward the Gaza Strip. Several people we spoke to in Gaza, including John Ging, the head of UNRAW in Gaza, outlined that there isn’t going to be any major reconstruction in Gaza at this time because no cement or construction materials are being allowed to enter by Israel.

In addition to the egregious war crimes carried out by the Israeli military in Gaza during the offensive, Gaza remains under siege, a siege imposed on the Gaza since June 2007, which continues until today.

Today 90 per cent of the goods entering the Gaza Strip, are coming in through the tunnels, the entire economy has been forced to go underground as all crossing into Gaza are controlled by Israel and are open only a few days a month at best, allowing only a trickle of humanitarian aid to enter.
Today Gaza is completely dependent on the tunnel trade, as Israel has closed all the major crossings and Egypt has sealed the Rafah crossing, so the only way for people in Gaza to survive is through the tunnels. Goods entering Gaza through the tunnels are generally very expensive, up to three to four times the previous prices in Gaza, which means many people often can’t afford the goods. UNRAW’s Ging outlined clearly that the majority of people in Gaza are increasingly dependent on food aid from UNRAW, a situation that is simply not sustainable.
Thirteen thousand families that own small farms in the Gaza Strip sustained damage during the latest war, so it is impossible for people in Gaza to achieve food security given Israeli military actions.
Gaza is a beautiful place, it is on the Mediterranean, it could be full of groves, olives, lemons, oranges, vegetables throughout Gaza, however agriculture in Gaza has been destroyed. How can the destruction of farm lands be justified under international law? What is the justification for destroying dumdums and dumdums of farm land, for the destruction of chicken farms for example? Today people in Gaza are dependent on the tunnels for livestock.
Going back to the destruction, the visual is incredible, many of the neighbourhoods that were completely wiped-out, were destroyed in the last few days of the operation, as Israeli ground troops were withdrawing.
In several places there was a clear pattern; Apache helicopters and F-16s hovering over Gaza would carry out strikes, then people in the neighbourhoods would start to leave their homes in between the strikes, [at which time] these horrific incidents occurred, the shooting of civilians with white flags, children being used as human shields, then once the Palestinians had vacated the civilian areas by force often their homes would be destroyed.
Palestinians returning back from taking shelter in U.N. schools or medical centers, often returned to completely destroyed homes, to rubble, entire neighbourhoods destroyed.
Many places throughout the Gaza Strip are beginning to look like Rafah, where Palestinian homes close to the Egyptian border were destroyed and bulldozed in the early 2000s. It was one of these homes that Rachel Corrie was defending in Rafah when the Israeli army killed her during this same period. Again even more of this border area with Egypt has again been reduced to rubble and this is the area where the tunnel trade operates.
Despite all the talk of a ceasefire it is important to remember that Israeli airstrikes continue in the south, everyday there is an attack near the tunnels, so anyone who still lives in this area who is able to hold on to what remains of their homes remains in danger. One of the first Israeli attacks that happened soon after the ceasefire was announced killed a farmer who lived in Khuza'a who was visiting his farm after the so-called ceasefire was declared and was killed.
So many Palestinian farmers have invested so much, often times their life savings in building up their farms, who speak of their farms as an investment for future generations to be able to survive off agriculture in Gaza. Today what Palestinian farmers and Palestinians are demanding is some sort of guarantee from their government and also the international community that this will not happen again, that their lives will not be destroyed again.
Despite everything the Palestinians still maintain what’s called in Arabic sumoud, which means steadfastness. Despite everything Palestinians will return to piles of rubble everyday, returning to simply come and sit on their land to ensure that no one can claim their land, can take it away.
Almost three quarters of the population in the Gaza Strip are refugees; however much of the destruction happened not in refugee camps but in areas where Palestinian families have owned the land for centuries, these Palestinians have been displaced and have formed in a sense a new generation of refugees. Also there are Palestinians who experienced exile in 1948, who were refugees in the original Nakba, who explained that they were never more scared in their lives than their experiences during this most recent operation.
Stefan Christoff: You mentioned the aid conference that happened in Egypt, with the new U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in attendance. I'm wondering what your sense was from people on the ground in Gaza in regards to the new U.S. administration, the election of Barack Obama, was there cynicism or hope towards the situation in Gaza changing?
Anjali Kamat: Most people feel that there isn’t going to be much change under an Obama administration… People were impressed by Barack Obama as an individual and many people were genuinely surprised, as people were around the world, that the U.S. elected its first African-American president.
However in terms of people expecting any real policy change towards Israel/Palestine, people were quite cynical. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton promised $9 million in aid to reconstruct Gaza and none of this aid is actually going to get to Gaza; two-thirds of the aid is going to the Palestinian Authority, to Fatah in Ramallah, to aid the security forces of the Palestinian Authority, while the remaining aid is supposed to get to Gaza, however the U.S. refuses to recognize Hamas as a legitimate government so it is at this point unclear how the money is actually going to get to Gaza.
SC: Can you talk about what is happening along the border in Rafah? Could you talk about how the tunnel trade is perceived within Palestinian society in Gaza?
AK: The tunnels are a life-line to the Gaza Strip, they are the only operating entry and exit point to the Gaza Strip today. You have everything imaginable coming through the tunnels, everything that is required to sustain a population, including basics, milk, lamb, chicken, clothes, shoes, blankets, diapers, sanitary items, toiletries, everything comes in through the tunnels.
What’s interesting is that the tunnels are completely visible, when you get to Rafah you can see the tunnel openings, they are these big green-house type of structures, covered in tarps, all along the border and everyone knows that they exist.
I think that most people are of two minds concerning the tunnels. On one hand they know that this is the only thing allowing them to survive, however the tunnels have also created a different type of economy, they have created a whole new group of people who are becoming rich from the tunnel trade.
People who operate the tunnels generally are those who can’t sustain a traditional means of operating a business, so they invest money to dig the tunnels, they put their former employees to work to dig the tunnels and importing goods through the tunnels and selling them at very high prices.
Tunnels today are really a result of the closure policy enforced by Israel. Palestinians have no other choice, as they have been forced by the circumstances to dig tunnels to ensure that the population survives. As previously mentioned 80 per cent of the population in Gaza is dependent on UNRAW for food while everyone else is dependent on the tunnels and Israel will continue bombing these tunnels however Palestinians will continue to rebuild them as long as complete closure is a reality.
While visiting Gaza we saw tunnels that had been bombed the night previously and people gathered at six in the morning to start rebuilding the tunnels. The unemployment rate in the Gaza Strip is 70 per cent, there is no work, no way to make an income and the only way for young men is to go to work building tunnels, former farmers, drivers, college students with no job prospects so they have turned to the tunnel trade.
SC: There was serious attention internationally towards Israel’s decision to ban international press from entering Gaza in the latest war. Al Jazeera and also Democracy Now! were both widely followed as alternative media sources. Al Jazeera was the only international news agency with reporters on the ground in Gaza. What is your take after visiting Gaza on the way that the latest conflict was covered by the international press?
AK: One of the things that came forward in regards to Israel’s latest operation in Gaza was the timing of the operation, between Christmas and New Year’s when most internationals working in the Gaza Strip are not in Gaza, then Israel banned the foreign press which gives Israel a free hand to do whatever it wants to go, to act with complete impunity.
Al Jazeera was the only international media agency to have reporters inside Gaza. While there were a couple individuals, from for example newspapers in Spain who came into Gaza through the boats. So there was clearly a hike in focus and attention towards alternative media coverage on Gaza. Although people in Gaza articulated a general frustration about the way that the international media coverage addressed the Gaza war.
Every single international media report would talk about Sedrot and Gaza as if there is equal suffering in the two places. It was impossible to talk about what was really happening in Gaza within the major news networks internationally, to talk about the pain and trauma being suffered by the 1.5 million inhabitants in Gaza squeezed into this small strip. The destruction in Gaza is really unbelievable.
Journalists seemed incapable of talking about what’s happening in Gaza without trying to make some sort of equivalency with Israel, more specifically with Sedrot, when the situations are simply not comparable. Thirteen Israelis were killed versus almost 1400 Palestinians and under international law such figures would be discussed in terms of proportionality and the legal use of force in a conflict, which Israel clearly violated.

Caribbean-Korean way to develop our countries in the new relation with United States and Europe.

The economic crisis is forcing Europe to loose 30% of the capital of South Korea to seek areas of investment, at this moment, and as soon as possible, are billions of dollars in goods and services, some of which can benefit the Caribbean and Florida, directly, if we employ a common strategy as the Caribbean countries and lifting the blockade against Cuba. That would be just the beginning of a great movement in the economic area to increase, later, with the union of the two Koreas to a significant levels because of the close ties between Cuba and North Korea.(Source: "Radio Korea International"

The state is the responsable that its citizens can live in the use of their money and not expecting the money to drop from the sky.
Neither of the two Koreas, under any circumstances, have based their development on the basis of an economy of ma' and pa' remittances. Both South Korea and the North is worried about government social assistance schemes that reach all citizens and the real barrier to climate problems that impede social chaos. Monitoring the movement of capital, accounting systems and the scrutiny of civil servants employed in the two Koreas, despite the difference of systems have been key to the high scientific and technological development of the entire Korean peninsula. Uncontrolled money remittances have served, so many times, to support terrorism in the Middle East and are being monitored in United States. That should do the same in the Caribbean through the banks if we really want to control the drug trafficking, organized crime, trafficking, and corruption of public officials. Basic technical aspects are likely to have security for investors in the region and have no ideological or political means. Are basic moral and ethical problems that the state should not get used to its citizens having to live off remittances from abroad if we want any respect from the rich or the magazine "The Economist" which is published in London.
A key factor in this relationship between the economies of Caribbean and Florida to learn to work in coordination with the lobbying of Puerto Rico and Cuban Americans in Congress and the Senate because that is an issue that is above ideological differences and / or policies related to climate change, drug trafficking, terrorism, human trafficking, immigration, human and social rights, and organized crime, moreover, that are vital in a relationship with United States is a large elephant in a glassware store for a small and poor country like ours in terms of biodiversity and identity. Another vital aspect is to learn to work with American unions* and high levels of security companies such as EXXON MOBIL CORPORATION to maintain production levels to more efficient security and benefits to the worker.
*70% of the American aproved unions.
Vladimir Ilich Lenin ran the master plan and development of the electrification of Russia, a country of feudal serfs, Lenin use the best of his era, was not, or ideological, or political, was guided by the scientific theory of the modern state of which Lenin was the great precursor for all mankind. Lenin was the first in human history that conceives a scientific model of the modern state and its technical aspects that are neither left nor right, nor resist political assessment, as is true today the concept of Marx on the credit in this economic crisis ..
Attorney General's Office, auditors, system, consumer protection and banking systems must have a common database to handle the nation's economic behavior and state, for the exchange of information enters the area and countries and with Police agencies in Europe and United States.
Caribbean governments can not be guided by good will of the United States and Europe, or its current domestic democratic order that "deux ex machina" to develop into our societies poor and dependent. We must find own way to interact with United States and Europe. The French Revolution never came to the Caribbean rather than as a reference for the lighting. Caribbean just arrived at Napoleon's troops and later the United States invaded. This policy will not change overnight, even as psychologial stereotipe in he commun citizen as happen in the time of Roman Empire and barbarian countries*, if we are not be able to have a political process that requires communication, understanding it, cooperation with United States people and government, anyway, because we are faced with the dilemma of climate change affects the survival of all species. The planet could be completely flooded with water or losing atmosphere unless we act with sensitivity, cooperation and sense of humanity. It is no longer the danger of nuclear war between Russia and United States which threatens us, but destruction of habitat and the spread of hunger, disease and contamination of groundwater. So I think we should all support the UN and support peace, for example, between Iran and Israel, and protect the people of Israel from any threat to their security but continue to support the Palestinian cause.
*A sample of what I say on the psychology of the Roman Empire in the United States is that the "Enola Gray," the airplane that launched the atomic bomb on Japan today has a museum to educate future generations as if it was a glorious fight, the fatal mistake of making an experiment the pump with the Japanese people long after the Emperor of Japan will send a letter of surrender to Stalin published in a newsletter of the American nuclear scientists recently.
While these patterns are maintained in Europe and United States, guide of the education of future generations, Caribbean leaders must look with fear Stalin eating and taking liquor with German ambassador a few hours before the invasion of the Reich.
That was just a minute ago in the history.

It is a big mistake to isolate Israel from the community, internacionally, we must also learn to argue and interact with the government of Israel and his problems, and to cooperate with any peace effort with the Arabic world from Israel. We can not be accomplices of the Holocaust of the Jewish people, we will never out of conviction, and moral education, but to criticize Israel.
Inside us, there are marginals way of meaning if we see our face in a mirror:We know very well the psychology of racism, colonialism and exploitation of the irresponsible and uprooted elites in the Caribbean, whether black or white, now. when we believe that the system of slavery and the African trade has disappeared, but many people are slavishly serve to a powerful local untocheables as they were their slaves or servants of their particular farm.
The lack of Democracy kill the state based on an always corrupted and untouchable burocracy of families. At the end, the most unuseful people, the most corrupted and unprepared take position of leadership destroyng the economic of the country based on demagogy chovinism and a very unmatured and unbalanced political of masses. That happen in capitalist and socialist country because the state has not political orientacion, neither to the left, neither to rigth, is baseds on every citizen as they are, without discriminaion and with the policy of equal opportunity for all.
And we ask for garantee, too, in the international relation, but:
What is the guarantee that gives us Europe and United States not invaded in Latin America, where only a few days ago Israel bombing Gaza without any mercy, and never, ever, there was a UN mandate, nor the Security Council to that the commander in chief of the blue helmets deployed troops in Gaza, security, security in a world that passively contemplate the slaughter of the Palestinians? Do we, the caribbeans, are safe and have better look than palestinian to the glasses of this people who managed the world economy and decided wether or not we must be invaded or how long we must be blockaded as Saint Petersburg by the nazis?

The President of Iran Mahamoud Admadinejad has a reputation for being too radical against Israel because the Jews are actually still being harassed and persecuted in many parts of the world, precisely by he was so critical in the recent UN Conference Against Racism: Racism was the argument and is an apparent contradiction, because in essence the President of Iran gave birth to pray to God and to the nations a counciusness of clemency to Palestinians people that nobody had yet, really, and at the eyes of God for his sin is forgiven, but God never will forgive those who could stop the recently slaughter in Gaza of women, children and the elderly and did not simply do nothing to stop it and now left the room or abstained from attending the conference at the time when the Iranian President recently spoke at the Conference on Racism in the United Nations. Roman Catholic as I, give my soul for the Jewish people who educated and give me love in Havana when I was children to any sin of the President of Iran, but I pray to God that God give long life to the President of Iran and more mercy and enligthement for defending the defenseless Palestinians entirely isolated for the psychology of the people leaving a conference in the midst of diplomatic efforts to a less savage and hostile world that they don't care and it does not matter for them because they are selfish more than racist. They feel better than the other one because they fill they are rich and in the deep they are soo ignorant people than does'nt know themselves, the excuse is Israel but the behavior is the same as fariseus in the Bible.

How can we trust those who applauded at the last Summit in Davos, Switzerland, the indiscriminate slaughter of the Palestinians?

I wonder, as they can go to churches to pray believing that God hears hearts full of unacknowledged sins.
If as I think I am as mad as Don Quixote by my Spanish-Cuban education, it luck is like my soul will go when I die, as a Roman Catholic in Cuba with the Palestinians in Gaza'souls who died innocently and the souls of the Haitians who died in hospitals for lack of a primary physician, so, my soul to be with Dulcinea, fiametta loved by Pushkin and Bocaccio which flew to the stars,
something has to serve this life and not to walk like a dandy the planet earth. We have no other weapon that the ideal of love for this flame in the wind, the butterfly of Pandora's box, beautiful illumination of the soul and that makes men great.
? What goes, into our secret mind,to be sane if we have so much major sins against God under the umbrella of sins of others with much smaller ones than ours, we who live in abundance in the middle of the first first world, if we do not have a sense of compassion within us into our souls to be in brotherhood doing well with all people of the planet, without distinction. Jesus healed the sick as it does today, a physician, admitted insane, beggars and marginalized in their entourage but at the same time hitting the rich and well dressed Pharisees. I am convinced that the world today again to crucify Christ if he born as human again, even with awareness of his innocence, just for daring to show a path of humility and love.

If there is a cessation of tensions between Seoul and Pyongang reinsurers of investment capital,(Helvetia) will gain confidence and a high flow of Korean and Japanesse, may be others Asian tigers, business would be first flowing to Florida, second to the Caribbean and Central America that has a strong Cuban-American lobby in Congress and Senate, (The only one with power that caribbean has in United States)this would attract capital of Asians Tigers even in competition with the presence of China in the region. The main benefit will be Florida's economy, particularly the Cuban community that would gain greater political and economic weight in the Caribbean area and inside the caribbean hispanic community in United States based on a new policy to Cuba without embargo and the trade on strategic billonaire cuban oil area so few miles to the coast of Florida.
But, do we need to wait for more recession, foreclosure and bankrupcy to take action...?
This solution between business partners have not considerations, neither ideological or political, is the fast track to provide a solution to economic and climatic changes problems in the Caribbean area, Florida and Caribbean Sea, and the Korean peninsula war must be diverted to a commercial rivalry between Asian investors to win the U.S. market using the Florida-Caribbean area as a springboard.
There area a loT of money, diamonts, kruggers waiting in the central banks (REF: Switzerland Confederation President Internal Report 1995)around the world for new markets open to the bussines with the confidence of peace and political stability.
Inversionist don't trust in ideology or political consideration, they trust in energy and bussines as JUAN GABRIEL BORMAN, the personage of IBSEN.
A. - The Caribbean countries may be "small tigers" of Latin American and global economy, if we study the cultural patterns of the Korean peninsula.

President Barack Obama and his government team has just opened the doors in Trinidad Tobago in a new relationship between United States and Latin America that could have an impact on the Korean peninsula, particularly in South Korea's relations with the Caribbean, after Visit with a large delegation to that country by the President of Santo Domingo, Leonel Fernandez in front of a large delegation. No one has questioned, at the Summit of the Americas the high moral quality and character of the American President, or his moral line on political issues. Obama, without being an idealist, Abraham Lincoln reminded us, pragmatic man, but fair for high ethical and moral values. Even has a high support of the entire Latin American left and labor movement of the North and South America. That is Barack Obama and the vast and rich America vibrating in new ideas on the future of the world. ? That a shift in United States towards its relationship with the countries of the Caribbean can weigh in the area of Korean culture in the light of four thousand years is an inexhaustible source of both novels as deserving of the Nobel prize and patent-class productions? I think, looking at the history of the Korean Peninsula and when several times I met with his youths, personally, in different latitudes of the planet, that President Leonel Fernandez is not wrong when he visited South Korea, I think the future of the countries in the Caribbean relationship with United States is to refer to the cultural patterns of Korea and especially of its young, healthy, and industrious with a high and strong interest for the perfect job and education rather than neat, refined and exquisite as never I have been seen anywhere in the world, that the korean young people.

South Korea for strategic reasons in the global economy has made important alliances with Brazil and developed in the Caribbean and Central America as an area of investment in the foreign policy goal to be "open to the bussines" in the markets of America: United States and Canada.

Due to the sheer weight of China in the global economy and Brazil in Latin America, the Caribbean countries with the integration of Cuba in the energy agreement with United States must be ready with an economic philosophy common to an accelerated participation of Korean companies in the hundreds of billions of dollars in trade for the Caribbean area which may result from the "international trade" of oil Cuba- United States, especially if there is finally a peace agreement with North Korea, a cuban-historic partner of Havana. This new scenario, can be close thanks President Obama in power and the cultural thesis of KiM Il SUNG in 1975 about two system and one culture based on pacific reunification, that would make the area a hotbed, Caribbean and Central America, economically significant because there are strong cultural factors matching the Korean culture and the ideal of Caribbean identity through our Chinese roots.

For the moment, England, France, Spain and Holland would be direct beneficiaries of the thrust of the Korean capital in the Caribbean, if this scenario is very possible, and within easy reach by the strong influence of Lula and Mexico, influential partners of Souh Korea, on the stage area of America.

(I remember that among the young generation in Cuba our ideal of perfection was to have the humility to learn like a Vietnamese and a to have the moral and the inteliggence of a Korean under any circunstance. Korea was a myth for us in Cuba.)

This scenario is based on that today nobody, absolutely nobody can object to the importance of China as an essential engine of the global economy more influential inside the market most influential on the earth: Mexico-United States and Canada. So we talk about the real possibility that the political philosophy of President Obama has the real ability to bring these historical currents. Theoretically, we believe, in this new stage in the possibility of many happy endings in the chaos of everyday life and its contradictions.

The basic problem of the countries in the Caribbean before a rain of capitals is the culture and its relation to energy in the development investment. The problem of culture and infrastructure at all levels of Caribbean societies. That I think is a major problem.

As in the ancient culture of Korea, the cultures that comprise the Caribbean are born into our identity based on resistance against colonialism, but now, in a new relation with United States we are prepared to be integrated into a medical thinking(that come from the American Medicine School) on all our companies and at the level of each community, a thought which assimilates the past as a source of spiritual ascension to new moral and spiritual values that will consolidate even more our cultural identity, our diversity in the context of technology, commerce and science. Neither is our way of being a symptom of backwardness or development is to accumulate wealth for display to the neighbor, but simply can be highly useful to ourselves and the rest of the world if we apply the medical thinking into our cultures so that every citizen is involved in the process of social development and growth of our biodiversity with the same humanitarian psichology based on Pasteur(School of Medicine in France) of dedication of a doctor M.D to his patients.

A scenario for the Caribbean as an area of investment, business and markets as hurricane which revolves around the oil business, we will be connected with the whole world from the Port of Tampa, the city of Sarasota, and half to three hours on a yacht to Cuba and Miami, this implies that the old ideology of cultural resistance will be as a serious guide to the blind beggar of El Lazarillo Thormes unless our culture could be as an integrated system to the individual's identity behavior from the doctor who thought wich thing is broken and useless and which could be assimilates and can be used to develop and balance our biodiversity, our way of being inserted to the rest of the world. We can not be like Sparta that fall down because don't know nothing about currency, only a resistence ideology or like Grece who named the foreigners "barbarians" or like Roma who decline under corruption like happens recently with the Soviet Unions or with the economy of United States, based on a weak system of accounting in both cases. We can not imitate them because we are little and lacks of resources in hands. We have the first resource: the culture in the way that develop South Korea, for example, in the relation with United States.

Indeed, this idea is the summary from the abstracs of the thesis on the korean culture of Kim Il Sum, father as a birthday gift to Mao Tse Tung in 1975 in company of Ho Chi Ming, a scientific research on Korean culture that he raises to a policy of state, since that date, for peaceful reunification with the motto: "one country, two systems, a single culture". This project is consistent with the goverment policy direction of the culture that has risen to South Korea to be an Asian tiger economy of the world in a few years in its United States relationship.

This is an idea about the culture in developing countries consistent with the ideal of the United Nations and can be considered a legacy of the theory of knowledge that the Korean President to lay the whole of humanity for peace and prosperity even with different orientations government.
